Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has launched new threats against Greece.

After his meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, he accused Greece of “condemning refugees to death at sea by drilling their inflatable boats” and that blaming Turkey for the refugee crisis was “a real ingratitude”.

“If we open our borders, I do not know what Greece will suffer, I do not know what Greece will do,” said the Turkish president.

In addition, Erdogan expressed his dissatisfaction with the Greece-US defense agreement as well as the base in Alexandroupolis. “Greece has been turned into a US military base,” he said.
In turn, the Hungarian Prime Minister said: “We must help our Turkish friends in immigration. “The EU must support Turkey as much as possible.”

From the Greek side, these statements were commented by the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesman, Giannis Oikonomou.

“Greece is a European state governed by the rule of law. It protects its borders, which are also the borders of the European Union, and at the same time saves human lives at sea. And when threatened by countries that use desperate people to achieve geopolitical goals, it will always respond decisively. He did this in Evros in March 2020, with the support of Europe.

Recent developments on the Belarusian-EU border in Poland and the Baltic states underscore once again that Europe will not tolerate the instrumentalization of refugees.

“And this is a message that everyone must take seriously,” said Mr. Economou.
