Rumors of a Russian S-300 air defense system shooting down an Israeli fighter jet over Syria in May have been confirmed, as the Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has made statements about the incident.

Specifically, during flights over Syria, Israeli fighters were targeted in May by an S-300 operated by Russian forces. The anti-aircraft system fired a shot against the Israeli fighter (it is not specified how many aircraft were in the area) which missed.

During statements yesterday, the Israeli Ministry of Defense described the incident as an “isolated incident” and said that at the time the S-300 fired, the Israeli fighter jets had already left the area, as a result of which it did not find a target.

What remains to be seen is whether it really is an “isolated incident” or whether it showcases the gradual deterioration of relations between Russia and Israel that will lead to a change of attitude regarding the flights of Israeli fighters over Syria in the future.

We remind you that Russia and Syria several times turn a blind eye to Israeli bombings against Iranian targets in Syria.

Syria seems to have informally accepted this as efforts to intercept Israeli fighters have resulted in a heavy blood toll for Syrian forces.

During Taiwan’s annual military drills on Tuesday, the entire island launched a simulated Chinese attack and virtually fought to defend itself against the approaching landing forces.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen praised the “capability” of her military as she watched the drills from the deck of a Kidd-class destroyer.

Dressed in military uniform, Tsai boarded the destroyer on the second day of the island’s biggest annual military exercises to oversee a high-intensity live-fire exercise off Taiwan’s east coast.

Tsai sent a message from the ship to citizens that was broadcast using Taiwan’s official name, the Republic of China.

In the message, he said that “the successful exercise carried out by everyone shows the capabilities and determination of the People’s Republic of China military to defend the country.”

According to Taiwan’s Armed Forces, various types of missiles were fired from fighter planes and warships in an attempt to intercept “a group of enemy ships” approaching in order to land forces.

Speaking to Al Arabiya television, Iraqi Defense Minister Juma Inad said: “Turkey has not responded to Baghdad’s calls to withdraw from the Zelkan military base. A brigade of Turkish soldiers entered 20 kilometers into northern Iraq.”

Referring to the artillery attack in Zakho, the Iraqi Minister said that “Turkey used 155 mm heavy artillery in its latest artillery attack.”

Stating that Turkey is a neighboring and friendly country, Inad said that “the PKK entered the depths of Iraq by taking advantage of the conditions.”

Saying that they proposed to Turkey to establish joint centers in Diyarbakir and Mosul, he stressed that they were surprised by the Zakho attack.

“Turkey is responsible for killing civilians in Zakho,” the Iraqi Defense Minister said, adding that this would not go unpunished.

On July 20, the Turkish army attacked the Perex resort in the Zakho border region, killing 9 Iraqi tourists, including women and children, and injuring 29 others.

In addition to Iraq, several countries have issued statements strongly condemning the attack. The Iraqi government once again protested to the United Nations Security Council after the attack.

It seems that Greece wants to be ahead of the developments as after the intense political instability in Israel, the Greek Prime Minister had a telephone conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu.

Specifically, the announcement from the Greek Prime Minister’s Office states:

“Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation today with the Leader of Israel’s Official Opposition Benjamin Netanyahu

Current international and regional developments were discussed during the conversation. The Prime Minister underlined the firm will of our country to further strengthen and expand the already excellent relations between Greece and Israel, for the consolidation of which he worked closely in the past with Mr. Netanyahu” the announcement concludes.

This telephone communication seems to be very important as Netanyahu is one of the favorites, if not the favorite for the next Israeli elections.

Provocative and anecdotal statements by Omer Celik:

The spokesman for the ruling Turkish party, Ömer Çelik gave a press conference in which he did not fail to attack Greece again, saying that it “violates human rights”

Specifically in his provocative statement he said:

“He took a wrong step again and closed 4 schools of the Turkish minority. Look, this is a systematic violation of human rights by Greece and contrary to any agreement, it violates human rights treaties. The European Union should intervene” said Omer Celik who rediscovered a Turkish minority where it does not exist.

Interestedly enough, the Turkish side keeps invoking the Lausanne treaty to supposedly bolster their arguments, but they seem to interpret it in a certain way.

The Treaty of Lausanne clarifies the issue of minorities and there is no Turkish.

Zelensky on the Russian sights again

Russia appears to have retargeted Zelensky despite its earlier claims and stated that Moscow’s ultimate goal is to topple the Ukrainian government.

Lavrov said Moscow was committed to helping the people of Ukraine “liberate themselves from the burden of this completely intolerable regime” as he addressed delegates at the Arab League summit in Cairo late Sunday night.

Lavrov accused Ukraine and its “Western partners” of spreading disinformation aimed at ensuring that Ukraine would “become Russia’s eternal enemy“.

“The Russian and Ukrainian people will continue to live together” he said, adding, “We would undoubtedly help the Ukrainian people to get rid of this regime, which is completely anti-people and unhistorical.”

Lavrov’s statements, as reported by the AP, came in stark contrast to the position taken by the Kremlin at the beginning of the conflict, where Russian officials assured that they did not intend to overthrow the Ukrainian government.
