NATO’s member states are slated to review a proposal that seeks to construct a centralized coordination point for an allied space surveillance center before a virtual meeting on Thursday.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg revealed early this week that Ramstein Air Base in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate will likely be the location of the intergovernmental military alliance’s space center.

Toulouse, France, and Kalkar, in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia, were discussed as potential locations.

Stoltenberg believes an official announcement will occur by October 22.

“This will be a focal point for ensuring space support to NATO operations, sharing information and coordinating our activities,” an unnamed NATO official told Stars and Stripes on Monday.

NATO countries account for around half of the more than 2,000 satellites in orbit.
