Two B-52 bombers of the US Air Force, carried out interception and escort exercise with Greek F-16s, in the framework of Operation ONYX HOOK.

According to an announcement of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, at the request of USEUCOM (US European Command), on Monday, March 7, 2022, two US Strategic Bomber Task Force B-52 bombers during their flight under Operation “ONYX HOOK” conducted training and escort by a pair of Greek F-16 Fighter Jets at the Athens FIR.

The fighter jets took on the role of intercepting and escorting the B-52s inside the Athens FIR after their entry from the Sofia FIR, en route above Thrace, the Northern Sporades, Central Greece and the Peloponnese, at which time they reached Greek Western borders.

This activity highlights the strong military ties between Greece and the United States and is part of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff plan for the constantly upgraded and multilevel military cooperation of the Armed Forces of the two countries both in the framework of the updated Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA) and in an inter-alliance framework.
