Syrian state media reported that the Syrian state had signed an agreement with companies from the United Arab Emirates for the construction of a solar power plant near Damascus.

The agreement was signed two days after UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Emirati Foreign Minister’s visit was the first such visit since the start of the war in Syria.

“The Ministry of Electricity and the UAE consortium of companies have signed a cooperation agreement to build a 300-megawatt solar power plant on the outskirts of Damascus,” the Syrian news agency SANA reported.

The project was approved last month, and Syrian Finance Minister Samer al-Khalil has said it is a positive sign for future investment in Syria.

For its part, the UAE Ministry of Finance announced that it has agreed with Syria on the future strengthening of economic cooperation and exploration of new areas of cooperation between the two nations.
