The existence of the “ghost of Kyiv” was denied by the Ukrainian Air Force after the extent of this urban legend in the international media.
The legend began when in the first days of the war the former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, giving optimism to the Ukrainian people, presented in a Twitter post “Kyiv ghost”, a pilot of the Ukrainian Air Force who had won many air battles against the Russians.
According to a report in the Times of London, the “Ghost of Kiev” has been the pilot Stepan Tarabalka, who was killed in a skirmish on March 13. However, the Ukrainian Air Force denies this information.
Yuriy Ignat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, said he wanted to clarify matters surrounding the “Kyiv ghost” story.
Stepan Tarabilka is not the “ghost of Kyiv” and did not shoot down 40 planes. On March 13, 2022, Commander Stepan Tarabilka was heroically killed in a skirmish with the forces of the Russian occupiers.
The “ghost of Kyiv” is a legendary superhero created by the Ukrainians! “This is rather a collective image of the Air Force pilots defending the capital’s skies, who suddenly appear where you least expect them,” Ignat said.
