Outraged by Spain’s decision to support a plan for autonomy for Western Sahara from Morocco, Algeria recalled its ambassador to Madrid to express its strong dissatisfaction.
In a statement published in the Algerian state media on Saturday, the Algerian government strongly criticized the change in the position of Spain.
Algeria actively supports the Polisario Front, which is claiming the independence of Western Sahara from Morocco.
With huge resources phosphates, Morocco considers Western Sahara as a very important part of its sovereignty and there is no way it can accept any independence of this region easily.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares formally backed Morocco’s 2007 plan to grant autonomy rather than independence to Western Sahara on Friday, calling it “the most serious and realistic plan” to end the long-running conflict.
