Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that “reunification” with Taiwan is something that “must be fulfilled immediately”, as we informed you on GEOPOLITIKI, tensions with Taiwan have increased dramatically in the last few months.

Xi Jinping said unification should be achieved peacefully, following talks with the United States in which he is thought to have forced the Chinese president to change his previous war rhetoric but warned that the Chinese people have a “glorious tradition” of opposing autonomy.

Taiwan, on the other hand, responded to Xi Jinping’s statements by saying that its future is in the hands of its people.

Xi Jinping’s statement comes after a surprising approach to Taiwan’s air defence zone by a record number of Chinese fighter jets, with the flights being used in order to threaten the Taiwanese president ahead of the island’s national day on Sunday.

Addressing an event marking the anniversary of the Chinese Revolution, he said unification in a “peaceful manner” was “more in the best interests of the Chinese nation, including its compatriots in Taiwan.”
