Taiwan reports 27 Chinese military aircraft sorties, 21 crossing the median line, in a new “joint combat readiness patrol”

Taiwan's defence ministry says 21 of 27 Chinese aircraft sorties detected from 10:43 on 20 October crossed the Strait median line, and that its forces responded with surveillance, aircraft, ships and shore-based missiles.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said on 20 October 2026 that it had detected 27 sorties by Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combat and auxiliary aircraft and drones, 21 of which crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and its extension. The ministry said the aircraft operated together with PLA ships under what it called a so-called “joint combat readiness patrol” and a “far-seas long-range” activity.

In its press release, issued at 14:30 local time, the ministry said the aircraft began to be detected from 10:43. It named J-10, J-11, J-16, JH-7 and H-6 aircraft and KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft, along with drones, without giving a breakdown by type. According to Taipei, the 21 aircraft that crossed the median line entered Taiwan’s northern, central and southwestern airspace and the airspace of the western Pacific.

The ministry described the activity as harassment of the air and sea areas around Taiwan. It said Taiwan’s armed forces kept close watch through joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance means, and sent aircraft and ships and used shore-based missile systems to respond appropriately. It did not say how many aircraft or vessels Taiwan used, and the release gave no number or type of Chinese ships.

How it compares with recent reports

The count of 27 sorties is higher than the 19 reported for the “joint combat readiness patrol” the ministry announced on 9 October, when 13 aircraft crossed the median line. It is also well above the ministry’s daily report published earlier on 20 October, which covered the 24 hours to 6 a.m. and recorded 14 aircraft sorties, eight of them across the median line, and seven PLA Navy ships. The two figures are not strictly comparable: the new release counts sorties detected from 10:43 on 20 October, while the daily report covers a fixed 24-hour period.

Geopolitiki covered both earlier reports: Taiwan MND: 14 Chinese aircraft sorties, 8 crossing the median line, and 7 PLA Navy ships around the island on 20 October and Taiwan reports 19 Chinese military aircraft sorties, 13 crossing the Strait median line, in a “joint combat readiness patrol”.

The figures above are Taiwan’s own account. The release carries no statement from Beijing on the activity, and the ministry did not say whether it expects the patrol to continue.
