Russia claims to be using a new generation of russian laser weapons in Ukraine to destroy drones.
The statement was made by Yuri Borisov, the Russian deputy prime minister, on a state television channel on Wednesday.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS, Borisov said that the first prototype of a new generation of laser weapons, called “Zadira”, is used in Ukraine. Laser weapons systems have begun to arrive (in the army). The first types are already in use,” Borisov said, according to TASS.
Little is known about “Zadira” but according to Borisov, it can destroy a target up to 5 km away by burning it.
Russia’s deputy prime minister has said that the new weapon is more powerful than the “Peresvet” laser system introduced in 2018, which is capable of blinding satellites up to 1,500 km above the Earth’s surface.

“If the Peresvet blind satelites, then the new generation of laser weapons leads to the natural destruction of the target – thermal destruction, they burn,” Borisov said. This new generation of weapons “will allow Russia to save on Pantsir and Tor missiles” he said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky scoffed at the news of Russia’s new laser weapon, comparing Moscow’s announcement to the so-called “miracle weapons” revealed by Germany during World War II when Nazi forces began to lose ground.
“The clearer it became that they had no hope in the war, the more propaganda was made for an amazing weapon that would be powerful enough to ensure a turning point. “And so we see that in the third month of a full-scale war, Russia is trying to find its ‘miracle weapon’; all this clearly shows the complete failure of the mission,” Zelensky said.
