A misunderstanding has erupted between Iran and Russia over a Russian request that involved Western sanctions to Russia for Ukraine over the Iran nuclear deal.
The request made by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has for no reason called into question at the moment the prospects for the restoration of the 2015 nuclear agreement with the world powers, which according to several sources had a positive sign.
The problem arose when Sergey Lavrov asked for a written guarantee from the United States that Western sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine will not affect Iran-Russia relations and cooperation between them.
According to the Iranian news website Tasnim, Russia’s ambassador to Tehran, Levan Dzhagaryan, said there had been a “misunderstanding” about Lavrov’s comments.
Commenting on the incident, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the request as completely invalid, saying it had nothing to do with the talks.
A phone conversation followed today between Iran and Russia and specifically of the Foreign Ministers in order to resolve the misunderstanding.
During phone communication The Iranian Foreign Minister expressed Iran’s opposition to the war but also to the imposition of foreign sanctions, stressing that cooperation between the Islamic Republic and Russia should not be affected by sanctions.
