NATO: “We intercepted Russian fighter jets”

NATO has deployed fighter jets in the last few days to “monitor and intercept” Russian aircraft flying close to the alliance’s airspace.

A statement from NATO said on Friday that the Allies had been monitoring “a number of unidentified” fighter jets over the Baltic and the Black Sea since Tuesday and that allied aircraft had flown in from Germany’s Uedem and Spain’s Torrejon.

Poland, Denmark, France, Spain, Romania, and the United Kingdom sent fighter jets to identify the unknown aircraft approaching the alliance’s airspace.

“Allies deployed from the north to the south of Europe remain united in support of NATO’s air policing mission,” said Lt. Gen. Jorg Lebert, chief of staff of the Allied Air Force.

“The rapid response of the two NATO Joint Aviation Operations Centers demonstrates the readiness and capability of NATO forces to guard Allied skies 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” he added.

The Russian fighter jets never crossed the alliance airspace and NATO said in a statement that “the interceptions were carried out in a safe and normal manner”, but did not specify how many interceptions were made in total.
