The following is the statement made two days ago by the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias to journalists during his visit to Imbros:
“First of all, I am particularly moved to be in Imbros today, 11 years after the last visit of a Greek Foreign Minister here. And, indeed, that I will have the great opportunity to attend the Epitaph, which will be presided over by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
Apart from that, however, I must tell you that my great joy also has to do with the fact that I am visiting the Greek community, the Greek schools, the Greeks who are here, who work and live in this historic place. We must do everything we can to support their presence here. To support the Greeks who chose and were able to stay in Imbros, to work here, to create a vibrant community.
And the greatest joy is to see the children, 60 children attending schools in Imbros, and they are the best legacy for the future. I hope that the next time a Greek Minister comes here, the 60 children will be 120,” the statement concludes.
