The United Nations said on 22 October 2026 that long-range Russian attacks on Ukraine are intensifying, including on Kyiv. According to the UN News summary of the humanitarian situation, at least 14 civilians were killed and 78 were injured overnight into Thursday, 22 October. Seven of the wounded were children.
Energy and health facilities hit
UN News reports that the strikes further damaged health and energy facilities, citing Ukrainian authorities. Overnight attacks hit energy infrastructure in the Poltava, Rivne and Volyn regions and disrupted power supply there, according to those authorities. Hostilities caused power cuts in six frontline areas, and emergency outages were reported in Kyiv.
The UN summary also carries a report from Russian-occupied parts of the Donetsk region, where two civilians were reported killed and nine injured. These figures come from reports in the occupied area and are not independently confirmed in the UN text. The casualty figures for the rest of Ukraine are given by the UN on the basis of information from the Ukrainian side.
Aid under constraints
On Wednesday, 21 October, a team from the UN Department of Safety and Security delivered relief supplies to a community near the contact line in the Zaporizhzhia region. The UN described access to such frontline areas as “severely constrained”. Separately, UNICEF said this week that it has supported nearly 70,000 frontline families with cash assistance, delivered together with Ukrainian authorities to help households prepare for winter.
