NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that the war in Ukraine will lead to more deaths and destruction in the coming days, and called on Putin to withdraw all Russian troops unconditionally.
“The coming days are likely to be worse, with more deaths, more suffering and more disasters,” Stoltenberg told reporters after the alliance’s foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
However, he ruled out the possibility of NATO sending troops to fight in Ukraine or creating a no-fly zone over the country, as this could put NATO in a direct armed confrontation with Russia.
“The allies agree that we should not have NATO planes operating on Ukrainian airspace or NATO troops on Ukrainian territory,” he said.
