Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during an interview with Alpha’s TV was asked to answer why Greece sent military equipment to Ukraine in addition to humanitarian aid.
More specifically the Prime Minister answering a question, Antonis Sroiter stated about Ukraine:
“First, let’s explain why I made this decision. Because it was morally correct and nationally imperative. It is morally right because a free country is under attack here and we must stand by it.
All countries stand on the side of democracy and the inalienable possibility that a country must have to defend its territorial integrity. I have no doubt, then, that we did the right thing, as the vast majority of European countries did in the end. The European Union did it itself.
On the same day that we made the decision, the European Union itself decided to provide, in my view, defence equipment, beware, defence equipment is what we give. Because the country is under attack, it is defending, it is not attacking.
Beyond that, however, with what moral status, Mr Sroiter, would we ask for the same assistance if we were in the same situation?
As I said in Parliament, we had one more reason than other European countries to be on the right side of history. To do it quickly, to do it without asterisks and footnotes and to be able to show that we are an active member, to the extent that we participate.
I have no illusions, the balance on the battlefield does not change with the ammunition and weapons sent by Greece. But we sent a signal: that we are, as we have always been in our history, with the right side of history, we honor our alliances and in this way, I believe that the prestige of the country is strengthened.
“And a broader message is being sent, that at this time logics of revisionism, arguments about demilitarization like the ones we hear about in our wider neighbourhood – obviously no longer have any place at all,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis about the defence equipment sent to Ukraine.
