M2A2 Bradley ODS for Greece: The offer, costs and unanswered questions

The M2A2 Bradley ODS attracted Greek interest as a possible way to strengthen mechanised infantry with a used U.S. vehicle. The 2023 discussion about as many as 300 vehicles was a potential transfer, not proof that Greece had taken delivery. Subsequent inspections and the cost of restoring stored vehicles made their condition and total price central to the decision.

What an M2A2 ODS offers

The Bradley carries infantry under armour and supports them with a 25 mm cannon, TOW anti-tank missiles and a coaxial machine gun. Operation Desert Storm improvements followed lessons from the 1991 Gulf War, adding changes to navigation, awareness and crew equipment. The U.S. Army identifies M2A2 ODS vehicles in its own training fleet. The ODS label alone does not tell a buyer the maintenance state or exact upgrade level of each stored hull.

The Greek procurement question

An Excess Defense Articles transfer can reduce the initial acquisition price while leaving Greece to pay for inspection, transport, restoration, spares, ammunition and training. A 2024 Greek parliamentary question hosted by the Defence Ministry referred to an intended release of 60 Bradleys, underscoring that figures changed after the earlier 300-vehicle discussion. A parliamentary question is not a signed purchase or a delivery notice.

The Bradley could improve protected mobility and anti-armour fire for Greek mechanised units if sound vehicles and support were available at a viable cost. The decisive comparison is a fully restored, supported fleet versus alternative new or used IFVs. Without an official acquisition and delivery confirmation, the article remains an assessment of a proposal.
