Turkey’s Fidan heads to Brussels for foreign, justice and interior talks with Belgium and meetings with NATO and EU officials

Turkey’s foreign ministry says Hakan Fidan, with the justice and interior ministers, will be in Brussels from 19 to 21 October for talks with Belgium and meetings with NATO and EU officials.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry announced on 19 October that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi will travel to Brussels from 19 to 21 October for the fourth meeting of the foreign, justice and interior ministers of Turkey and Belgium.

According to the ministry’s press release (No. 201), the Turkish side will meet Belgium’s ministers of foreign affairs, justice and interior. The release does not name the Belgian ministers. It lists the topics as bilateral issues, including counterterrorism, judicial and police cooperation, consular affairs, visas and migration, as well as regional and international developments.

The announcement says Fidan will also hold separate bilateral meetings with high-level NATO and EU officials during the visit. It does not say which officials he will meet or what will be on the agenda of those talks.

The text is a pre-meeting announcement, so it reports no discussions held and no agreements reached. Outcomes will be known only after the talks, and any Turkish or Belgian readout will need to be checked when it appears.

Fidan has been in regional diplomacy in recent days: he was due to open the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation foreign ministers’ session in Baghdad on 17 and 18 October and met China’s Wang Yi in Baku, as Geopolitiki reported in Wang Yi and Fidan meet in Baku: China readout cites Belt and Road, Middle Corridor and COP31.
