Senior military officials from Thailand and the United States met in Hawaii on 6 November for the 28th Thai-American Consultation Senior Staff Talks, a regular defence-planning forum between the two treaty allies, according to a release from U.S. Pacific Command published through DVIDS, the U.S. military’s official media distribution service.
The talks were held at Camp H. M. Smith. They were co-chaired by Maj. Gen. Patrick Teague, director of Strategic Planning and Policy (J5) at U.S. Pacific Command, and Lt. Gen. Chatree Chanpitak, director of Joint Operations of the Royal Thai Armed Forces.
What was discussed
According to the command, the delegations addressed shared regional challenges and worked on preparations for the 5th Senior Leaders’ Dialogue, which is scheduled for February 2027. In that context they discussed the way forward on preparing what the release calls the “eight-star annex”, building on progress made at previous Senior Leaders’ Dialogues. The release does not explain what the annex contains.
Both sides, the command said, remain committed to strengthening their military partnership, advancing modernisation efforts, expanding medical cooperation and promoting interoperability. The release describes the U.S.-Thailand alliance as a key factor for stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Why the format matters
Staff talks of this kind are working-level meetings that prepare the ground for higher-level dialogues, which is why the release frames the Hawaii session around the February 2027 leaders’ meeting. No agreements, deployments or funding were announced in the release, and it does not say whether any document was signed.
The meeting is one of several bilateral military consultations U.S. Pacific Command holds with Indo-Pacific partners. Its release states that the command seeks to promote security cooperation, encourage peaceful development, respond to contingencies and deter aggression in the region.
