In a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, it was stated that a fleet of ships from the Pacific Fleet, consisting of the missile cruiser Varyag, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs, and the massive sea tanker Boris Butoma, had arrived in the Iranian port of Chahbehar.

A Russian Navy official delegation will take part in a conference in the Iranian port, for the organization of the joint naval exercises involving warships from Russia, Iran, and China, which is scheduled to take place later this month.

A detachment of ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet embarked on a lengthy campaign from Vladivostok, Russia, a few days before the start of the new year.

According to Levan Dzhagaryan, the Russian Ambassador to Tehran, the major goal of the drills is to perform steps to protect the safety of international shipping and the fight against sea pirates, both of which are now underway.

As he stated in an interview with the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, joint drills will take place in the Persian Gulf region.
