“Turkey is imagining imperial practices with aggressive actions, from Syria to Libya, from Somalia to Cyprus, from the Aegean to the Caucasus.
Sometimes by drawing arbitrary maps, sometimes by signing invalid memoranda and sometimes by passing vague domestic laws on issues that are regulated by international rules”, stressed the Greek PM, Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the joint press conference with the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the President of Egypt at the Tripartite Summit between Cyprus, Greece, and Egypt.
“But mainly by accompanying all this with layered unilateral challenges framed by an extreme, often aggressive, rhetoric. We agreed that this behavior blatantly violates international law and undermines regional security, for which all three countries are working hard,” he said.
“But mainly by accompanying all this with layered unilateral challenges framed by an extreme, often aggressive, rhetoric. We agreed that this behavior blatantly violates international law and undermines regional security, for which all three countries are working hard,” he said.
“It is a behavior that often, and this is particularly felt here in Cyprus, offends decisions of the UN Security Council and the EU. Behavior that creates problems in the North Atlantic Alliance and is an attitude that comes against the explicit positions of important countries, the United States, Russia, the Arab world, all neighboring countries,” he added.
“The meeting demonstrates that our cooperation is governed by mutual respect but also by a strategic understanding of the benefits it brings. Our cooperation is not directed against anyone”, stressed the President of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis.
According to Mr. Anastasiadis, the Tripartite Summit examined ways to “further expand our partnerships” and reaffirmed the importance of creating the Euro-Africa Interconnector electricity network.
Then Mr. Anastasiadis welcomed the decision to establish (within 2020) a permanent secretariat of the tripartite cooperation, based in Nicosia.
Referring to Egypt, he noted that it is a factor in stopping the flow of migrants to Europe, as the EU recognizes.
Regarding Turkey, he said that “with a series of illegal actions it escalates tensions and widens instability. The three countries condemn the illegal actions in Famagusta, calling on Turkey to respect UN resolutions.”
Finally, he stated that at the Summit “we stressed the importance of respecting maritime borders based on international law and not the interpretation of each country”.
For his part, the Egyptian president said that the cooperation of the three countries is aimed, among other things, at the delimitation of the maritime zones.
“Constructive discussions have taken place today, especially on violations of international law,” he said, noting that Egypt has never used immigration to exploit its European partners and reap economic or political benefits.
