The citizens of Izmir, also known as Smirni or Σμύρνη, gathered at the port to witness the arrival of TCG Anadolu, which Turkey claims to be the world’s first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) carrier.
The ship was handed over to the Turkish Armed Forces in a ceremony held in Tuzla, attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and arrived in Izmir on May 7th to a warm reception.
TCG Anadolu is capable of carrying heavy vehicles such as tanks, armored vehicles, and amphibious assault vehicles. In addition, it will also carry the Bayraktar TB3 and Kizilelma UAVs, which are still under development. The ship’s arrival was met with great enthusiasm by the Turkish citizens of Izmir, but also with a fair share of provocative statements against Greece.
According to a Turkish citizen quoted in Turkish media, “It’s worth the wait in the line to see the aircraft carrier TCG ANADOLU. Let Greece and Europe fear us. The Turks are coming.”
This statement made headlines in several Turkish media outlets, with many on social media from Turkey agreeing with him.
However, it’s important to note that Turkish public opinion is heavily influenced by decades of aggressive statements by Turkish politicians, and many Turks believe that Turkey must attack and capture Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.
The arrival of TCG Anadolu is an important milestone for Turkey’s military capabilities, but it raises concerns for regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
As recent statements from some Turkish politicians suggest a willingness to take aggressive actions against Greece, it’s important to note that Greece possesses the weapons and necessary assets to respond adequately if it deems it necessary.
Maintaining peaceful relations and avoiding unnecessary conflict is crucial for the stability of the region.
