Ukraine has launched an official investigation into a video circulating on social media showing Ukrainian soldiers shooting Russian prisoners in their legs.
Adviser to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy Oleksiy Arestovich commented on the video:
“The government is taking this very seriously and there will be an immediate investigation.”
In a message to the Telegram, Arestovich warned Ukrainian forces and militias that “the abuse of prisoners is a war crime for which there is no amnesty under martial law and there is no statute of limitations.”
He added: “I would like to remind everyone that we are a European army.”
“We treat all prisoners in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, regardless of our personal feelings,” said the adviser to the Ukrainian president.
In the five-minute video that first came to light by the Times of London, Russian prisoners of war appear to have been shot in the knees by Ukrainian soldiers.
