President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a formal request from Ukraine to join the European Union (EU).
“We call on the European Union for the immediate accession of Ukraine through a new special procedure,” said President Zelensky in a new video message.
“Our goal is to unite all Europeans and, most importantly, to be equal. I’m sure it makes sense. I’m sure it’s possible,” the Ukrainian President said.
Zelensky also called on Russian soldiers to lay down their arms.
“Give up your equipment. Get out of this situation. Do not trust your commanders. Do not listen to your propagandists. Just save your life,” Zelensky said.
Ukraine reports that more than 4,500 Russian soldiers were killed during the fighting. Russia has officially acknowledged casualties but has not given a specific number.
