“EastMed pipeline is Alive and Kicking”: Nikos Dendias sent a clear message

  • “It is alive and kicking”, said Nikos Dendias and underlined that from the beginning the financial viability of the project was a precondition.
  • Therefore, the US Secretary of State does not say that EastMed is dead as a project, but that it is useless in this period of time.
  • The Greek Foreign Minister also pointed out that those who prejudge the cancellation of EastMed make arguments based on geopolitics.

“EastMed pipeline is alive and kicking,” Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said at the Delphi Economic Forum.

Responding to a question by journalist Alexia Tasouli that had to do with the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the USA, Victoria Nuland’s interview, which she said was the “the last straw” on the construction of the EastMed pipeline, Nikos Dendias said that Ms. Nuland expressed an opinion against the pipeline, but “I did not see EastMed dead,” he said characteristically.

“It is alive and kicking”, said Nikos Dendias and underlined that from the beginning the financial viability of the project was a precondition.

The Greek Foreign Minister said Ms Nuland had raised the issue of financial viability and time horizons. Therefore, the US Secretary of State does not say that EastMed is dead as a project, but that it is useless in this period of time.

The Greek Foreign Minister also pointed out that those who prejudge the cancellation of EastMed make arguments based on geopolitics.

In this regard, however, he noted that the US supports the EuroAsia Interconnector, for the transmission of electricity, which has exactly the same direction and therefore there is no geopolitical dispute against EastMed, but only an economic dispute.

In addition, Nikos Dendias stated that the United States is in favor of the cooperation scheme of Greece, Cyprus, Israel + the USA and stressed that they rely on this figure.
