Cyprus is not “far away,” as the Hellenic Navy and the Hellenic Air Force have been continually proving over the past few years, including during the “EUNOMIA” exercise.
According to a recent announcement by Hellenic Army General Staff, “on Thursday 06 October 2022, the Quadrilateral Aeronautical Exercise named “EUNOMIA 3-22”, which took place in the Eastern Mediterranean, as part of the Coordinated Quadrilateral Initiative QUAD of Greece, France, Italy and Cyprus, was completed.
“EUNOMIA 3-22” was held for the first time in 2020 and its coordination for 2022 was taken over by Italy. During the Exercise, objects of Search & Rescue, protection of a hydrocarbon mining rig, as well as objects of anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and combating air threats were performed.
The purpose of the Exercise was to strengthen cooperation in the field of aeronautical operations, to ensure freedom of navigation in the region, as well as to strengthen the interoperability and combat capability of the participating units.
The Hellenic Armed Forces participated with the Frigate SALAMIS, the Submarine KATSONIS, 6 F-16s, 1 Flying radar EMB-145H and a Team of the Underwater Demolition Command (DYK).
France participated with 2 RAFALE fighter jets, Italy with the Frigate ITS LIBECCIO and Cyprus with the IOANNIDIS Offshore Patrol Vessel, one AW-139 Helicopter, one Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) and Special Operations Unit.
On Thursday 06 October 2022 and at the end of the Exercise, the Distinguished Visitors Day (DV Day) took place, the activities of which were attended by representatives of all 4 QUAD Countries, including the Vice Commander of the Fleet Rear Admiral Polychronis Koulouris as representative of the Hellenic Army General Staff, the Chief of General Staff of the National Guard Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, the Commander of the French Mediterranean and Black Sea Naval Forces Vice Admiral Gilles Boidevezi and the Commander of the 1st Naval Command of the Italian Navy Rear Admiral Lorenzano Di Renzo.
During the DV Day, which took place at sea under the coordination of Italy and Cyprus in the maritime area east of Limassol, search and rescue operations, fast rope rescues, and Hellenic Air Force fighter jet flights were carried out.
“EUNOMIA 3-22″, which is part of the international cooperations of the Hellenic Armed Forces in accordance with the planning of the Greek Army General Staff, demonstrates the collective intention and commitment of the Armed Forces of the 4 Member States of the European Union in terms of implementation and respect of the International Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), with the aim of highlighting the role played by Greece, Cyprus, France and Italy as pillars for the promotion of security and stability in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean” concludes the announcement of Hellenic Army General Staff.
