Iraqi counterattack: Operation to exterminate extremist Islamists in Anbar

The Iraqi armed forces continue their counter-terrorism operations in various parts of the country, a spokesman for the armed forces in Baghdad said yesterday.

The Iraqi army has launched a new operation in al-Anbar province.

According to the statement, Iraqi officials said the operation was carried out in the city of Al-Qaim in Anbar province against extremist Islamists who were trying to regroup after multiple Iranian airstrikes last week.

Iraqi army forces hit Islamist strongholds during the operation in Al Qaeda and managed to occupy most of the positions. The operation is currently being carried out with the support of the Iraqi Air Force.

ISIS forces have stepped up their attacks on Iraqi civilians and security forces in the past three months, launching a massive manhunt across Iraq to locate them.
