Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said on 9 October 2026 that it detected 19 sorties by Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combat and auxiliary aircraft and drones around the island, which it described as a so-called “joint combat readiness patrol”. Of the 19 sorties, 13 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s northern, central and southwestern airspace, the ministry said.
According to the ministry’s press release, issued at 14:30 local time, the first aircraft were detected from 08:52. It named J-16, J-11, Su-30, JH-7, KJ-500 and Y-8 electronic warfare aircraft among the types involved, without giving a breakdown by type. The aircraft operated in coordination with vessels of the PLA Navy, the ministry said, but it gave no number or type of ships.
Taipei characterised the activity as harassment of Taiwan’s surrounding airspace and waters. In response, the ministry said Taiwan’s armed forces used joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets, sent aircraft and naval vessels, and deployed shore-based missile systems. It did not say how many aircraft or ships were used.
The ministry has issued releases under the same “joint combat readiness patrol” label several times in recent weeks, including on 5 and 9 September, 17 September and 6 October, according to its press release archive. The figures above are Taiwan’s account; the release does not carry a Chinese statement on the activity.
Earlier Geopolitiki coverage included Taiwan: “We love peace but will not give up our freedom,” Lai says on National Day, with a warning over China’s pressure.
