Britain has extended the support contract for the Royal Air Force’s A400M Atlas transport fleet, with the Ministry of Defence saying the deal will raise aircraft availability by 30 percent. The £190 million extension was agreed with Airbus Defence and Space UK and runs until April 2029.

According to the Ministry of Defence announcement, issued on 1 October and updated the following day, the number of mission-capable aircraft available each day is due to rise from 10 to 13 by the end of 2027.

What the contract covers

The agreement is a 31-month extension to the Medium-Term Contract under which Airbus supports the fleet from its UK Support Centre at RAF Brize Norton. The ministry says it keeps more than 350 jobs in Britain, including over 240 Airbus staff and 110 staff at primary subcontractors.

The ministry ties the deal to the Defence Investment Plan, which it describes as committing £298 billion to UK defence over the next four years.

Official comment

Defence Readiness and Industry Minister Luke Pollard called the extension “a vote of confidence in British engineering” and said it strengthens the RAF’s ability to operate globally and meet its NATO commitments. Air Cdre Si Young, Head Air Mobility at the National Armaments Materiel organisation, said the contract gives taxpayers “excellent value for money” while providing the capability the armed forces need.

Kata Escott, managing director of Airbus Defence and Space UK, described the A400M as “the backbone of Air Mobility” and said Airbus is a trusted partner of the ministry.

The announcement does not give the size of the RAF fleet or the baseline for the 30 percent figure beyond the daily availability numbers quoted above.
