With tension rising in the region, the French multi-mission frigate (FREMM) Languedoc successfully neutralized two hostile drones launched most probably by the Houthi in the Red Sea, near the Yemeni coast, on December 9, 2023. The Languedoc, encountered the drones approximately 110 kilometers off the coast of Al Hudaydah, Yemen. The first drone was intercepted and destroyed at around 21:30, followed by the second at approximately 23:30, French time.
The drones, originating from Yemen, posed a direct threat to “Languedoc” as they “were heading straight towards” the frigate. The swift and decisive action taken by the crew showcases the effectiveness of the French Navy’s defensive systems and their readiness to respond to potential aggressions in the region.
The US CENTCOM confirms on X (Twitter) that these drones were launched by the Houthi. This incident, as well as similar incidents in the past like USS Carney intercepting Houthi-launched missiles and drones, underscore the complex security challenges in the Red Sea region.
