Russia plans to withdraw from International Space Station (ISS)

In response to international sanctions aimed at punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, Russian state media Tass and RIA Novosti announced that Russia plans to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS).

Economic sanctions imposed by the West on Russia have so far frozen almost half of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves and have brought the Russian economy to dangerous levels.

In a statement to the Russian media, the director-general of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said: “The decision has already been made and we have no obligation to discuss it in public”

He said he could only say “that, in accordance with our duties, we will give our partners a one-year notice before we end our work on the International Space Station.”

However, this statement does not include this warning and the issue of withdrawal will probably depend to a large extent on the war in Ukraine.
