Cyprus prevented five Russian navy ships from docking

Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Cyprus prevented five Russian navy ships from docking.

The move runs counter to a previous agreement between Russia and Cyprus that specified that Russian warships could be housed in Cypriot ports and signalled a formal change in Nicosia’s stance on sanctions imposed on Russia.

Diplomatic sources of the Cypriot newspaper Phileleftheros stated that five ships that were to dock in the port of Limassol, will not do so after a ban by the Republic of Cyprus.

All European Union countries have imposed an embargo on the docking of Russian ships entering their ports, with Nicosia following this practice as an EU member state.

Due to the escalation of the war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus reportedly informed the Russian authorities that the agreement on the provision of facilities and the provision of mooring permits for Russian ships has been frozen.
