AEGEAN has announced the start of direct flights between Athens and Damascus from December 2, 2026. According to the company’s announcement on October 6, flights to Damascus International Airport will operate up to four times a week throughout the winter season, every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The airline presents the new link as part of the expansion of its Middle East network and says it strengthens Greece’s international connectivity and Athens’ position as a hub for the region. It is also considering expansion into North Africa. The addition of Libya to the network, with direct flights to Tripoli and Benghazi, is planned for May 2027, provided that the required assessments and regulatory procedures are completed. From October 23, 2026, AEGEAN is also restoring its direct Athens–Dubai flights.
Preparations in Damascus
The announcement follows a visit by an AEGEAN delegation to Damascus International Airport on September 9. Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced at the time that the delegation reviewed the airport’s operational and technical readiness, its passenger services and the requirements for starting regular direct flights between the two countries. The authority’s chairman, Omar Hosari, had said that such inspections usually precede an air carrier’s entry into a market and that Syria is seeking to reconnect its airports with more international destinations.
Delegations from Lufthansa and Eurowings visited Damascus airport for the same purpose around the same time, while an Egyptian team inspected the airports of Damascus and Aleppo ahead of the resumption of direct Syria–Egypt flights.
