U.S. armed forces stationed in Syria have endured several attacks within a 48-hour period from groups supported by Iran. These attacks follow intense U.S. airstrikes on Sunday, retaliating against previous assaults and targeting facilities associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran.
A U.S. official, speaking to CNN on Monday, confirmed at least four separate incidents against the U.S. forces post-Sunday’s operation. Despite the numerous attacks, no injuries or significant damages have been reported from these retaliatory actions by Iran-backed forces, including the Islamic Resistance of Iraq.
It should be pointed out that these organizations, according to their announcements, are carrying out these attacks in response “to the United States’ support of Israel against Hamas and Gaza.”
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized President’s prioritization of U.S. armed forces’ safety, clarifying that the U.S. will vigorously defend themselves against any threats.
The recent escalation and Sunday’s U.S. strike mark the third time in less than a month that the U.S. has taken direct action against targets in the region. Last Wednesday, U.S. F-15 fighter jets destroyed an arms storage facility used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in Syria and affiliated groups. Prior to this, on October 26, the U.S. army targeted two facilities linked to Iran-supported militias attacking U.S. bases.
Since October 17, at least 50 attacks targeting U.S. forces in the region have been recorded, resulting in numerous injuries. U.S. Pentagon officials reported that at least 56 U.S. soldiers have been injured.
The escalation in the Middle East continues to draw international attention, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. A possible new major involvement of the US in the region after the ongoing provocations posed by Iran, could lead to a sequence of developments.
