The European Commission said on Wednesday that it has not received any money from Poland in connection with the still operational Turów mine, despite sending Poland two requests for payment of penalties granted by the CJEU.
European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari said that if the money doesn’t flow, it will be deducted from the EU budget that Poland is entitled to.
Poland’s government spokesman, Piotr Müller, responded to this statement by reaffirming the government’s position that the CJEU ruling is “outside the competencies of the EU” and is therefore unacceptable.
According to Piotr Müller, Poland is waiting for the European Commission to take action in the current scenario. When asked if “it is possible” for the Commission to deduct these amounts “in a manner that Poland considers not in compliance with the law,” he said, “yes, they can do it.”
He also assured Polish people that they wouldn’t be affected, stating, “Another thing that is important to us is making sure that Poles do not lose their electrical power, which is why we are prepared to pay whatever it takes to ensure the safety of Polish families and prevent the power from being shut off for millions of people.”
