The USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier begins its final voyage

The US Navy announced that the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier is going to Bremerton, Washington to a ship-breaking facility in Brownsville, Texas in order to be scrapped.

More specifically the US Navy stated: “Kitty Hawk, the Navy’s last commissioned conventional-powered aircraft carrier, operated for 48 years before it was decommissioned in 2009.

Like other Navy aircraft carriers since USS Langley’s commissioning 100 years ago, Kitty Hawk and the rest of our nation’s aircraft carriers and embarked carrier air wings have projected power, sustained sea control, bolstered deterrence, provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and maintained our enduring commitments all over the world.” concludes the small statement from US Navy.

The ship was commissioned in 1961 and served in the Vietnam War in 1966. During the Ogaden War, the Tehran hostage crisis, and the Iran-Iraq war in the 1970s and 1980s, the US Navy aircraft carrier sailed in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.

She was stationed in Yokosuka (Japan) as US Navy’s forward carrier in 1998 and then sent to Iraq during the 2003 war.
