In the face of fierce resistance from the Ukrainians, Russia escalated its airstrikes and artillery fire against Ukrainian cities and military infrastructure.

Officials from the United States said there was great concern about how Putin would react to strong Ukrainian resistance. In particular, they expressed concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin, outraged by the resistance of the Ukrainian army, could consider indiscriminate attacks.

Ukraine has claimed that Russian troops are stepping up bombing of the country’s second-largest city, Kharkiv and that they are targeting residential areas as well as government facilities. Russia, for its part, has denied the allegations.

According to videos posted on social media and statements by Ukrainian officials, a huge explosion hit a Ukrainian government building in Kharkiv early Tuesday morning.

The authenticity of the video or who caused the explosion has not yet been confirmed.
