Speaking in a joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart on Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu threatened Cyprus that it would pay a very high price for its decision to allow the PYD, considered for Turkey a Syrian branch of the PKK, to open offices on the island.
Turkish Foreign Minister basically threatened Cyprus with military action as he said that Cyprus will pay the same price as other neighboring countries, pointing to Syria and Iraq which Turkey has invaded with the pretext of fighting Kurds.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated against Cyprus:
“Opening offices to terrorist organizations and hosting them is like playing with fire. We already know that Greece and the Greek Cypriot side have supported terrorist organizations, including the PKK to date.
This is no secret. But since they are allowed to open offices here, if there is any threat from here tomorrow, if there is an attack on Turkey or the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, or if there is an attack on our Turkish Cypriot brothers, we will make them pay for it. So don’t play with fire. Do not cooperate with terrorist organizations.
There may be issues on different issues that we cannot agree on. Our views are different. But the issue of terrorism is a very different issue. This is purely a matter of safety. When there is an attack on us, there is a cost, as it is in other places, as we do against the presence of terrorism in neighboring countries. This price will be heavy. I need to make that clear.”
