The Turkish-Armenian writer and linguist Sevan Nishanian was arrested a few days ago by the Greek authorities and faces a risk of extradition to Turkey. His wife, in a post on social media on Saturday, made known the arrest of the 66-year-old Armenian on the pretext of the expiration of his date of temporary stay in Greece.

Nishanian has been sentenced to 16 years and 7 months in prison for nine different charges, including insulting the prophet Muhammad, because of his book “The Wrong Republic” in which he criticizes the Turkish Republic and Kemal Ataturk.

The Armenian was imprisoned on January 2nd, 2014, and escaped on July 14th, 2017. Since then he has been living in Greece.

As informed by his wife through his marriage to a European citizen, he has the right of residence in Greece, which from what is reported has been unjustifiably cancelled by the state.

The Armenian embassy in Greece said it has been informed of the situation about the Armenian citizen and is taking measures to resolve the problem.

The court of Samos will reportedly rule on Tuesday, on his stay in Greece or extradition to Turkey.
