Greece sends BMP-1’s to Ukraine in exchange for German Marder 1A3’s

Greece will send a new package of weapons to Ukraine, according to an announcement by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

In particular, the German Chancellor stated that it has been arranged to provide the Ukrainian army with Soviet infantry fighting vehicles that Greece have and will be replaced by German ones.

“We will provide Greece with German infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs),” Scholz told reporters after a two-day EU summit in Brussels, adding that he had reached an agreement with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“The defense ministries will work out the details and implement this agreement quickly,” he said.

Greek Defense Ministry confirmed the news and stated:

“It is known from the Ministry of National Defense that after previous discussions and after today’s meeting of the Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the Chancellor of Germany Mr. Olaf Scholz, the transfer of East German BMP-1 Armored Combat Vehicles (received in 1994) was agreed upon in order to be sent to Ukraine and their simultaneous replacement with an equal number of German Marder Combat Armored Vehicles.

The details will be settled in the immediate future between the Ministry of National Defense and the Federal Ministry of Defense of Germany, in order for the agreement to be implemented as soon as possible” the announcement concludes.
