Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that his country should not delay joining NATO, as it could become more difficult in the future.
“What’s even worse for Finland to think about NATO?” Haavisto said in an interview with a Finnish radio station, adding that now was the right time for Helsinki to apply.
According to Haavisto, the situation in Ukraine has forced Helsinki to reconsider its security strategy. In addition, the minister said that it would be beneficial for Finland and Sweden to “synchronize” their positions on NATO membership.
Earlier this week, the Finnish parliament debated the country’s possible NATO membership. According to information, 114 legislators out of 200 have expressed their support for Helsinki’s accession to NATO.
We remind you that Russia has openly threatened Finland and Sweden that if they join NATO they will be attacked.
