Russia is against “Greater Albania” ideas as an announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia (MID), clarified that a redrawing of borders in the Balkans would be disastrous for security and stability in the Balkan region.
More Specifically, the Russian Embassy in Greece in a post, citing the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, states:
“We share the concern in relation to discussions on the creation of the so-called “Greater Albania” through the merge of the ‘two so-called Albanian states” in the Balkans. Such plans can only be described as provocative. Any redrawing of borders in the region is, by definition, disastrous for the already fragile stability in this part of Europe.”
In October 2021, Russia had again reacted to Albanian plans following statements by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for union with Kosovo.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had called Rama’s statements “absolutely unacceptable” and a “bold provocation” and pointed out that the plans to create “Greater Albania” are in contrast to the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
“It is particularly strange here that the violation of the document that is fundamental to the Kosovo settlement is declared as a ‘key objective’ in the political career of the leader of a Balkan country,” Zakharova had stated.
