Diplomatic crisis between Russia and Israel over Nazism has erupted

Israel on Monday condemned Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s claim that Adolf Hitler was of Jewish descent and demanded an apology from Moscow.

Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with an Italian television station on Sunday, stressing that there would be a “tough discussion” with the Russian ambassador.

“It’s an unforgivable, scandalous statement, a terrible historical mistake, and we look forward to an apology,” said Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid in an interview with the online edition of the Yedioth Ahronoth.

Russia has not yet commented on Israel’s stance.

When Lavrov was asked in an interview with the Italian channel Rete 4 “How does Russia ‘de-Nazify’ Ukraine since its president is Jewish,” the Russian Foreign Minister replied:

When they say “What kind of Nazism is this if we are Jews”, I think Hitler was also of Jewish descent, so it means nothing. “For a long time, we have been hearing the wise Jewish people say that the greatest anti-Semites are the Jews themselves.”
