“On January 24, the State Department approved the voluntary departure (“authorized departure”) of government officials and ordered the departure of their families from the US Embassy in Kyiv, with immediate effect,” reads a US statement about their diplomatic mission in Ukraine.
The US Embassy in Kyiv had requested a few days ago in the State Department a permit for evacuation of government officials .
The embassy’s announcement confirmed and stated that the departure of the staff is approved but is not mandatory. However, their families are required to leave Ukraine. The evacuation order will be reviewed in 30 days.
“The State Department took the decision to approve the departure from the Mission in Ukraine for greater precaution due to Russia’s ongoing efforts to destabilize the country and undermine the security of Ukrainian citizens and those visiting or residing in Ukraine. We have consulted with the Ukrainian government on this step and are coordinating with the embassies of the Allies and partners in Kyiv,” the US embassy said.
In addition, the State Department changed the travel drive to Ukraine. The travel lead was already at level 4 due to coronavirus and remains at level 4 but now hills of “increased threatening actions of the Russian army against Ukraine”.
