Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported 8 Chinese military aircraft sorties, 9 People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ships and 7 “official ships” around the island in the 24 hours from 6 a.m. on 15 October to 6 a.m. on 16 October, Taiwan time.
According to the ministry’s daily report, all 8 aircraft sorties crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait. The ministry said the aircraft entered Taiwan’s northern and southwestern air defence identification zone. The report gave no count of balloons.
Taiwan’s stated response
The MND said Taiwan’s forces monitored the activity and responded with combat air patrol aircraft, navy ships and coastal missile systems. The figures are the ministry’s own count and describe what Taiwan says it detected; the report does not include a statement from Beijing on these movements.
Context
The daily MND tally is the main public record of Chinese military activity near Taiwan. A comparison with an earlier report published by Geopolitiki shows the range of the daily numbers: in Taiwan reports 19 Chinese military aircraft sorties, 13 crossing the Strait median line, in a “joint combat readiness patrol”, the ministry counted more than twice as many sorties in one reporting period and described a coordinated patrol. The 16 October report does not use that description.
