A military operation against the Kurdish rebels in Iraq was announced by Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, saying that the fighting was in full swing.
PKK-linked targets in northern Iraq are being hit by Turkish fighter jets, artillery and special forces that have entered the area.
Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in a video posted on the ministry website early Monday that Turkish fighter jets and artillery units targeted PKK shelters, warehouses, caves and tunnel systems, as well as weapons storage and distribution centers, according to the video.
Subsequently, Turkish troops allegedly violated the border with Iraq and entered the area by helicopters, under the cover of armed Turkish UAVs.
For their part, Kurdish forces report that two Turkish helicopters were hit in the area and that there are about 28 dead Turkish soldiers, but this can not be confirmed.
This move of the Turks may be related to the recent artillery fire against Ayn Issa by Turkish forces in Syria.
