A Chinese state-run newspaper has threatened that if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits the island nation, “fighter jets” will be deployed as a threat and a “destructive strike” will be launched.

A trip by a House speaker would be the first since 1997, BUT Pelosi’s office has not confirmed any intentions for such a trip according to Newsweek.
China has stated that such a high-profile visit would be viewed as a considerable provocation as it considers Taiwan to be a part of its territory, in accordance with its “one nation, two systems” governance ideology.
Taiwan on the other hand is increasingly concerned in recent years that the Chinese Armed Forces (PLA) may attempt to regain full control of the island republic by using military means.
Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Thursday that if Pelosi were to visit Taiwan, China would take forceful measures to preserve its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Zhao went on to say that “All possible consequences that arise from this will completely be borne by the US side. The United States will bear the full consequences of this.” Zhao stated.
