Yannis Maniatis submitted 32 amendments seeking Turkey’s exclusion from European defence programmes and stronger protection for Greece–Cyprus energy infrastructure.

Greek MEP Yannis Maniatis says he has submitted 32 amendments to the European Parliament’s plenary, with the central aim of excluding Turkey from European defence programmes. In a social-media post on Monday, October 5, 2026, he said he was preparing for a major battle in Parliament over that objective.

Energy security and the Greece–Cyprus interconnector

The amendments call for energy security to be treated as an integral part of European defence. Maniatis is seeking stronger protection for submarine cables, pipelines, liquefied natural gas infrastructure and electricity interconnections.

He specifically named the Great Sea Interconnector between Greece and Cyprus. His October 5 official announcement identifies the amendments as part of the draft annual report on implementation of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy.
