According to information quoted by Israeli media, the son of Libyan general Khalifa Haftar had a secret meeting with Israeli officials last week, during which he offered to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries in exchange for support from Israel.
Saddam Haftar, who is expected to run in next month’s Libyan election by a private jet flying from Dubai to Libya, landed briefly at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
The Israeli newspaper reported that it was not known with which Israeli officials Saddam Haftar met during his visit, but that he had previously contacted Mossad’s political action and cooperation department, which deals with countries with which Israel has no relationships.
According to Haaretz sources, Haftar asked with his father order for “military and diplomatic assistance” in exchange for a commitment to normalize relations between Libya and Israel.
Israel has no formal diplomatic relations with the North African state, as Libya is a faithful ally of the Palestinians till now.
