NATO Crisis: Finland and Sweden send delegations to Turkey

In an effort to persuade Turkey to drop its objections to Sweden and Finland’s historic applications to join the NATO alliance, a delegation from each country was set to travel to Ankara on Wednesday in order to discuss the matter with senior Turkish officials.

Turkey has noted that it is opposed to the two Nordic countries becoming members of the military alliance, citing concerns with what it perceives to be Sweden and Finland’s support for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and other Kurdish organizations. The two Scandinavian countries have denied that allegations.

The Turkish stance against Finland and Sweden has generated a NATO Crisis as no one else really supports the Turkish position.

In a move that symbolizes one of the most significant geopolitical repercussions of Russia’s war in Ukraine and which might rewrite Europe’s security map Sweden and Finland filed their formal bids to join NATO last week.

It also accuses those two countries of restricting the export of armaments to Turkey and of refusing to deport people who are suspected of being “terrorists.”

We would like to remind you that Erdogan didn’t even want delegations from Sweden and Finland to visit Turkey over the issues with their NATO Membership. Nevertheless, it appears as though his threats may not be as effective as he had hoped.
